Using pea and plant protein to get enough protein on a vegan diet

Where would you be without protein?

Protein is an essential part of any healthy diet. It’s one of our body’s basic building blocks, helping to support muscles and organs, hair, skin, and nails. Crucially, protein plays a key role in building and repairing muscle. It’s one of the reasons why so many people use protein powders after a long run or a tough workout.

If you’re a vegan, then some sources of protein are off limits. If you’re going to get all your protein from your diet, then you’ll need to ensure that you consume enough protein from purely plant-based sources such as pulses and legumes.

If you’re following a vegan diet and have an ambitious set of fitness goals, then the amount of protein you’ll need will increase even further.

Are protein powders essential for a vegan diet?

Growing numbers of people are adopting vegan diets, for their own health, because of concerns about animal welfare and for the future of the planet. Many people who want to live the healthiest lifestyle they can adopt plant-based diets, coming to value the health benefits it gives them.

While protein powders are not absolutely essential if you’re following a vegan diet, they can certainly be helpful. The standard recommendation when it comes to protein consumption is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. For a 63 kg person (around 10 stones) that works out at over 50grams of protein a day. If you’re following an active lifestyle, this increases to 1 gram of protein per bodyweight.

These are significant levels of protein and no matter how well organised you are, it can be difficult to consume enough on a daily basis. This is where protein powders can help.

Are protein powders vegan-friendly?

Not all protein powders are compatible with a purely plant-based diet. Some protein powders contain whey and casein which are both dairy products, others contain protein derived from eggs and beef.

The good news is that plant-based protein powders are increasingly commonplace.

At Protein Rebel, we’ve created vegan protein powders that can help ensure you get the protein your body needs while supporting your health and fitness goals. Whatever your activity levels, our plant-based protein powders are designed to help you stay fit, healthy, and active.
