Why protein

Running uses muscle. Strength work builds it.

Every run puts load through your legs. Stronger muscles carry that load better — more force in each stride, less lost to fatigue over the last miles — which is why strength work is in almost every serious marathon plan. Speed and endurance both come from it.

Building muscle takes protein, and adding a strength session raises how much you need — often more than meals alone provide, and more again on a plant-based diet.

One 30g serving gives you 23g of a complete protein — pea and brown rice together — with nothing sweet, nothing artificial and no whey.

What protein does

  • Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass.
  • Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass.

High in protein: 23g per 30g serving. Take one serving a day as part of a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

That’s the whole idea. Runners tell us it’s the one they stick with.

Three tablespoons, one shake

How to use this protein

One serving after a run or a strength session. Twenty in the tin.

Step 1

300ml of milk or water

Into a shaker or blender. Oat milk if you want it creamier; water if you want it lighter.

Step 2

Add 30g — three tablespoons

That’s 23g of protein. No scoop in the tin; a level tablespoon is 10g.

Step 3

Shake and drink

Mixes clean, no grit. Best within an hour or so of finishing.

Rest days

Porridge, overnight oats, smoothie

Stir a serving in. It’s how a lot of our runners use the tin on the days they don’t train.

One serving a day. A top-up alongside a varied and balanced diet, not in place of one.

Where the protein comes from

Pea protein and brown rice protein, blended. On their own, each is short of one or two of the nine essential amino acids — pea is lower in methionine, rice is lower in lysine. Together they cover all nine, which is what “a complete protein” means.

The blend is made and packed in the UK. It has been tested for heavy metals — cadmium, lead, arsenic and mercury — by an ISO 17025 laboratory; all four came back well within limits.

Runners’ questions

What people ask before they buy

Does it actually taste of vanilla?

Sweetened with stevia and nothing else. Most reviews say it tastes good, but stevia divides people: a handful find it too sweet or catch a bitter aftertaste. If you already know you don’t get on with stevia, this won’t change your mind. If you’re not sure, try it with oat or almond milk before water.

“I find the stevia sweetener used in them leaves an unpleasant aftertaste. This however is much better than any others I have tried to date.” — Penny, Loox review, 4★

“I’ve finally found the vegan protein powder that tastes like a treat in the same way my whey ones used to.” — Christine, Loox review, 5★

Does it mix, or is it grainy?

In a shaker with 300ml of milk it mixes smooth. With water alone some people find it slightly grainy. Shake it hard rather than stirring it in a glass.

“Very nice flavour and the mix is smooth, which you do not always get with vegan protein.” — Graeme, Loox review, 5★

“Really like the flavour and it mixes quickly with no bits in it.” — Alice, Loox review, 5★

Will it bloat me? Other powders do.

We can’t promise how anyone’s stomach will react. What we can say is that after taste, this is the thing reviewers mention most — and that the ingredient list is four items, with no whey, no thickeners and no sugar alcohols. If dairy or sugar alcohols are what set you off, there are none here.

“No bloating afterwards like I’ve experienced with some other protein shakes!” — Kate, Loox review, 5★

“Tastes good and doesn’t give me wind.” — Dean, Loox review, 5★

I’m not vegan. Is it as good as my whey?

This gives you 2.2g of leucine per serving from pea and brown rice combined, a complete amino acid profile, four ingredients and no dairy. The people who switched mostly did it for their stomach or the ingredients list.

“Took a while to get used to the flavour of a plant-based protein after using whey for years, but now I really enjoy it.” — Michelle, Loox review, 5★

“I’m vegan but he’s not and he still loves it. We look forward to it every day after gym classes.” — Ann, Loox review, 5★

Is there a scoop in the tin?

No. A serving is three level tablespoons, or 30g on kitchen scales, which is more accurate anyway. It’s a tin rather than a plastic tub because the tin recycles easily in your council bin and sits nicely on any kitchen surface. Right where you can get hold of it.

“Love the fact it comes in a tin, mixes well, tastes good.” — Anna, Loox review, 5★

I only run. Do I actually need a protein powder?

The runners who find it useful are the ones doing strength work alongside their running, vegetarians and vegans who struggle to hit their intake, and anyone who can’t face a meal straight after a session. It doesn’t have to be a shake either: porridge, overnight oats, a smoothie, hot with cocoa after a cold run.

“Am vegetarian and realised I was struggling to achieve recommended intake around running. Have had this in shakes and overnight oats so far and it tastes great!” — Ruth, Loox review, 5★

“My new favourite way to take it after a cold run is with hot water, almond milk and cocoa powder.” — Charlie, Loox review, 5★
