“When I'm deep into a long mountain ultra, miles from the nearest checkpoint and the wheels are beginning to fall off, that's when I'll reach for my Maple Coffee gel.”

“Really useful on long ultras that take me through the night. Also fun before the shorter, faster stuff, and toward the business end of a road marathon.”

Why 45mg

Caffeine on your terms.

A gel carrying 100mg or more makes the decision for you. You take it once, and that is the caffeine in your race. 45mg is roughly what's in a cup of coffee — small enough to take at the point you want it, and again later as needed.

45mg Per gel, from coffee extract. About a cup of coffee.
180mg Four gels — still inside single-dose reference*.
Your dose? Flexibility to control your intake.

*For healthy adults, EFSA's reference intakes are 200mg in a single dose and 400mg across a day. Not recommended for children or pregnant women.

Where the caffeine goes

45mg. Enough to use again and again.

Three examples of how runners split Coffee and Ignite across a race. Each block is one gel.

Maple Coffee Maple Ignite
Half marathon ~2 hrs · 5 gels
Start 45mg at mile 9
Marathon ~4 hrs · 10 gels
Start 90mg · hours 2 and 3
Ultra 8 hrs+ · 20 gels
Start 135mg · hours 4, 6 and 8

Built on 60–75g of carbs per hour. Examples, not prescriptions — trial your fuelling in training.

Best Race Nutrition

Judged by a panel of runners against every other race-day product on the UK market. One category, one winner.

Run both

Same maple syrup. One with caffeine, one without.

Coffee and Ignite share the same maple syrup base, so nothing changes mid-race except the caffeine. Put Coffee where you want it. Run Ignite everywhere else.

“I lined up with three Maple Ignite gels and one Maple Coffee in my pocket. One in the warm-up, another at 5K, one more at 10K, and then the coffee gel with its caffeine kick at 15K.”

One gel, 36g

The numbers that matter mid-race.

27g Carbohydrate
45mg Caffeine
110mg Sodium
108 kcal

Contains caffeine. Not recommended for children or pregnant women (125 mg/100 g). Full nutrition panel and ingredients below.

Directions

Tear the top and drink — no water needed (but it is good practice to take at the same time).

Aim for 60–75g of carbs per hour on runs over 90 minutes — that's 2–3 gels. Build up gradually in training to find the carb intake that works for you. Racing hard, up to ~90g per hour (about 4 gels).

Every Maple Coffee adds 45mg of caffeine. Most runners take a few across a race and fill the rest of their fuelling with caffeine-free Maple Ignite, which uses the same maple base.

Nothing new on race day — trial your fuelling first.

Ingredients

Grade A Canadian maple syrup (96%), coffee extract with caffeine (3%) and sea salt.

Store in a cool, dry place.

Contains caffeine. Not recommended for children or pregnant women.

The sodium comes from the sea salt. The caffeine comes from the coffee extract.

Caffeine, plainly

Every gel contains 45mg of caffeine, or 125mg per 100g.

It comes from coffee extract — listed on the pack at 3% of the gel — not from synthetic caffeine added to a base.

45mg is roughly what you'd get in a cup of coffee.

Contains caffeine. Not recommended for children or pregnant women.

Runners ask us

Runners’ questions

“I’ve had caffeine gels wreck my stomach before. Is this any different?”

Different recipe. Maple Coffee is the same Grade A maple syrup base as Maple Ignite, with coffee extract and sea salt — three ingredients, nothing else. “Easy on the stomach, even with the caffeine” is the single most repeated line in our reviews. What we won’t say is that it can’t upset anyone. Trial it on a training run, not on race day, and if you know it’s caffeine itself that disagrees with you, Maple Ignite is the same base without it.

“Use them during my training and on my ultra events! Always easy on the stomach even having caffeine in them and genuinely give me the much needed boost I need when things are getting tough!”

— Julie, Loox review, 5★

“I was a little apprehensive about using caffeine gels after hearing horror stories. I used Protein Rebel and have to say the gels were delicious, which was a surprise. I took a gel prior to my latest 10k race and didn’t get the usual dip in performance at the 7k mark but felt strong right to the end. I’m hooked.”

— David, Loox review, 5★

“I don’t really drink coffee — and I’m worried it’ll be too sweet.”

Non-coffee drinkers review it well, and more than one has compared it to a coffee liqueur. On sweetness: it’s 96% maple syrup, so yes, it’s sweet — but the coffee’s bitterness cuts it. If you like neither maple syrup nor coffee, this isn’t your gel. Taste guarantee either way.

“Not a coffee drinker but mixed with the maple syrup, these gels are super tasty and have that extra caffeine kick. Ideal for when you’re starting to flag.”

— Tabitha, Loox review, 5★

“Very tasty, I was concerned they would be too sweet but the bitterness of the coffee balances it out.”

— Steven, Loox review, 4★

“Why only 45mg? Is that enough to feel?”

Yes. 45mg is about the same as a can of cola or a small mug of instant coffee, so one gel is a modest amount you can repeat; two gels is 90mg. We won’t tell you what it feels like, we'll leave that to the runners below. Daily intake guidance is in the nutrition section above. If you want a caffeine-free option, that’s Maple Ignite.

“Great gels, simple, natural ingredients with just enough caffeine to give a boost on the Ben Nevis Skyline.”

— Joanne, Loox review, 5★

“Really rate how this gives a noticeable boost and reduces perceived effort without any side effects, great for long distance running.”

— Nina, Loox review, 5★

“How do people actually use it — on its own, or with Maple Ignite?”

Mostly alongside. The pattern in reviews: Maple Ignite through the early miles, Maple Coffee held back for the second half — the 9-mile mark of a half, the last quarter of a marathon, the night section of an ultra. One runner plans one Coffee to every two Ignites. Both are the same maple base, so switching between them doesn’t change what your stomach is dealing with. Whichever way you split them, trial it in training first — nothing new on race day.

“Wasn’t sure I’d like the coffee, but I was very pleasantly surprised — planning on one coffee to two maples — tested this weekend and they were a great success on a practice run.”

— Clare, Loox review, 5★

“Used the coffee maple and the non coffee ones for my longest run Saturday! Was absolutely brilliant! The coffee towards the end was a great boost!”

— Angelique, Loox review, 5★

“Can I take one before the start, or is it only for mid-run?”

Yes. Many runners take a single Maple Coffee 20 to 30 minutes before their run, even at shorter distances.

“Finally found a pleasant tasting gel. Like the effect of these just before shorter races (up to 10k).”

— Sarah, Loox review, 5★

“Honestly one Maple Coffee before leaving the house and one mid run has massively improved my energy, pace and comfort. No side effects, just have to try and limit myself as they taste too nice.”

— Lysette, Loox review, 5★

“I’ve never used a gel. Is a caffeine one a bad place to start?”

Not a bad place, but not the only one. If you already drink coffee, Maple Coffee is a familiar amount of caffeine in a familiar flavour, and first-timers do start here. If you’ve never had a gel and you’re unsure about caffeine, start on Maple Ignite — the same maple syrup and sea salt with nothing else — and add Coffee once you know your stomach is happy. Either way the rule is the same: first gel on an easy run, never on race day.

“First time taking any type of gel as I’m an old newbie, felt like a Duracell bunny.”

— Allanah, Loox review, 5★

“I’ve been running for over 10 years and done over 100 marathons and at last I’ve found something that works that doesn’t disagree with me, will be using you again.”

— Jo, Loox review, 5★
